Tyres, air conditioning, drivetrain and inspection
Air conditioning that no longer cools well often has too little refrigerant, a leak or a technical problem in the system. A full cabin filter can also reduce the airflow. It is rarely something you can fix yourself.
Recognisable signs
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A technician identifies which cause fits your car after checking it.
Over time an air conditioning system loses refrigerant. Topping up can help, but it does not tell you why the level fell.
If the refrigerant keeps disappearing, there may be a leak that has to be tracked down.
A compressor that does not switch on, a faulty sensor or a fuse can limit the cooling.
Dirt in front of the condenser or a clogged cabin filter restricts heat removal or airflow.
A fan or a flap in the ventilation system that is not working properly can affect the temperature of the air blown out.
Keep driving?
Yes. Air conditioning that does not get cold has no effect on driving safety, although misted-up windows can be annoying. Use the ventilation setting for the windscreen if it mists up, and ideally arrange the check before the warm season.
