Warning lights and starting
If the temperature gauge climbs towards the red zone or a warning appears, the engine may be overheating. That can cause serious damage within a short time. The cause usually lies in the cooling system, but which part is at fault has to be investigated.
Recognisable signs
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A technician identifies which cause fits your car after checking it.
A leak or consumption makes the level drop. The engine can then no longer get rid of its heat.
If the thermostat stays closed, the coolant does not circulate to the radiator.
A pump that no longer pumps properly, or a fan that does not switch on, can make the cooling fail in stationary traffic.
Dirt or deposits can restrict the flow, and a leak can make the level drop.
In some cases overheating gives away a leaking head gasket. That is serious damage that needs investigating.
Keep driving?
No. It is best not to keep an overheated engine running. Stop safely, switch off the engine and let the car cool down calmly. If the coolant is low or the overheating comes back, have the car towed rather than driving on.
