Engine, exhaust and fluids
The colour of the smoke gives a first hint, but never certainty. A little white vapour on a cold start can simply be condensation. Persistent, thick white, blue or black smoke points to a possible problem with coolant, oil or combustion.
Recognisable signs
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A technician identifies which cause fits your car after checking it.
On a cold or damp day, white vapour can briefly come out of the exhaust. It goes away by itself once the exhaust is warm.
Thick white smoke with a sweet smell and a falling coolant level can point to an internal leak, for example a head gasket.
Worn parts, such as piston rings, valve stem seals or a turbo, can let oil into the combustion.
A dirty air filter, a faulty injector or sensor, or a problem with the EGR, turbo or particulate filter can cause too much fuel or too little air.
The combination of colour, smell and behaviour matters. An assessment in person is more reliable than a guess.
Keep driving?
Light, brief vapour on a cold start is usually no reason to stop. With heavy or persistent smoke, a burning smell, a rising temperature or a warning light, do not drive on: stop safely, switch off the engine and arrange help. With persistent light smoke you can drive carefully to a garage.
