Brakes, steering and handling
A steering wheel that vibrates often comes from the wheels and tyres, for example because the wheels are unbalanced. The suspension or brakes can also play a part. Notice when it happens: all the time, at certain speeds, or only when braking.
Recognisable signs
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A technician identifies which cause fits your car after checking it.
Small differences in weight make the wheel turn unevenly. That causes vibrations, especially at higher speeds. Balancing corrects this.
A bulge in the tyre, a bent rim or a badly fitted tyre can cause shaking.
A worn or unevenly worn tyre can vibrate and make noise.
Play in bearings, track rod ends or bushes can pass vibrations on to the steering wheel.
If the vibration happens mainly while braking, the brake discs may be the cause.
Keep driving?
With a slight vibration you can in many cases keep driving carefully until your appointment, preferably without high speeds. With strong vibrations, steering that feels unsteady or suspicious noises, it is safer to stop and ask for help.
