Tyres, air conditioning, drivetrain and inspection
The light tells you that the system has detected tyre pressure that is too low, or that the system itself has a fault. A tyre that is slowly going flat is one of the most common causes. Pressure that is too low affects grip, stopping distance and wear.
Recognisable signs
Possible causes
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. A technician identifies which cause fits your car after checking it.
A nail, a damaged valve or a leak at the wheel rim can make the pressure drop gradually.
In cold weather, tyre pressure drops. Sometimes topping up to the recommended pressure is enough, but also check that the pressure stays stable afterwards.
After a change, the system sometimes has to be reset, depending on the car.
A sensor in the wheel can be faulty or have a flat battery. The warning may then be wrong, but that has to be checked.
A bulge or crack in the tyre is a safety risk in itself, even if the pressure still seems fine.
Keep driving?
If the light is on but the tyres look normal, you can drive carefully to somewhere you can check the pressure. Do not keep driving for long on a tyre that is too soft: it can overheat and be damaged. If a tyre is visibly flat or unsafe, stop and arrange help.
